How To Keep A Pure Heart Before God

Maintaining a Clean Heart Before God

I know you’ve heard of people who think that they can do whatever they want because they are Christian and “Jesus paid the price”.  Some people PLAN to do wrong.  They will say, “I’m having sex with my girlfriend/boyfriend tonight, but I’ve already asked God for forgiveness, so it’s okay”.  Have you heard of this?  If not, let me school you on this thought process, and bring the truth of how you can keep a pure heart and understand God’s grace.

Author, Britney Chatmon wrote about purity of heart in her book, Scales of the Heart, so it was my joy to invite her to discuss with me about how to keep a pure heart before God.  We discussed:

-How A Heart Becomes Unclean

In Genesis 3 (oops, I said Genesis 4 in the video!), when Adam and Eve were in the garden, they were instructed now to eat from the Tree of Good and Evil.  The very sly serpent came and tempted Eve saying, ““We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,  but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”  She said that she was not supposed to EAT or TOUCH the fruit of the tree when truly, she was not supposed to EAT from the treat.

The snake perverted her belief rather than what God said first.  She believed that she could not TOUCH the fruit of the tree, but the reality was that she could according to God.  From this account, we know that Satan uses your miscellaneous beliefs (that are many times conditioning rather than truth) to tempt you.  He doesn’t begin by saying “Lie”.  He begins by saying, “Isn’t it true that you …, so when you say that you did this to, it wouldn’t be a lie?”  He is sly!

We went further in the passage to discuss how when God walked in the garden, Adam and Eve hid.  Prior to eating the fruit, they would walk alongside God, so why would they begin to run?  Shame, guilt, and an impure heart; a heart that sees good and evil.

“A heart becomes unclean when it replaces God’s word with the desires of the flesh”

After God questioned them, evicted them from the garden, and cursed them, He covered them with animal skins.  Blood had to be exchanged to cover their sin.  Fast forward to the New Testament, Jesus’ blood covers our sins.

-Where Grace and Deeds Balance

In the interview, Britney pointed out how Jesus’ blood covers our sins, but as children of God, our nature is different; not like the one exemplified above where the person intends to sin.  For this reason, Paul told the people of Ephesus in Ephesians 2:1-13:

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,  in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.  But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,  made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—  not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

(Pay special attention to this part)

Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)—  remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.  But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

-Action Steps For Maintaining A Pure Heart Before God

1. Tap into the Spirit

2. Maintain a Prayer Life.  Set goals and be intentional about spiritual growth.

3. Praise and Worship. Create a gratitude journal.  Write down your prayer requests and record the materialization.  Sing your praise and worship.

4. Serve in ministry. Connect to people who are like-minded in growing spiritually and connecting to God. Don’t idolize any individual too much that you allow hypocrisy to keep you away from fellowshipping with like-minded believers.

5. Put up boundaries.  Guard your gateways to your soul: your eyes, ears, nose, touch, and smell.  Do not allow anything to infiltrate your mind thru the gates to your soul.  Guard your mind!

6. Know that you are in spiritual battle and study how to overcome (read previous articles)

7. Know that you can have a clean heart.  Jesus showed how powerful you can be when you connect to Him.  Seek Kim for a clean heart.  He already paid for you to have it.
