Discussing What It Means To Be “Clean” In The New Covenant
The words clean and dirty are still in every language that I know of. However, some people have this idea about grace that makes no practical sense. People are offended by the truth that they are unclean! Look at the feet pictured above. What would you call them? UNCLEAN!
New Covenant “Christians” think that clean and unclean have gone away due to the new covenant. I hear many Christian people say that once you profess that Yeshua is Messiah, the concept of cleanliness and uncleanliness goes away. They perceive that the New Covenant has disregarded the idea of cleanliness and uncleanliness because of grace. If this is true, tell me how my salvation can stop me from having to clean my house because I would LOVE that. Until then, I will stick with scripture and my physical observation of it, and say, “That makes no practical sense!” In this post, we will compare Old Covenant cleanliness and uncleanliness with New Covenant cleanliness and uncleanliness. I know I have not “arrived”, and still have alot to learn, but in this post, I will be sharing what I know thus far about biblical cleanliness. Let’s go…
Spiritual Cleanliness = Staying washed with spiritual water
In the Old Covenant, we see a re-occuring illustration of spiritual cleanliness and uncleanliness. With references to Nimrod, the Nephilim, Enoch, and Noah; you can see the difference in those who are spiritual crossbreeds, those who ally with the kingdom of darkness, and those who demonstrate an unbending surrender to God (even in very dark times). Some become spiritual crossbreeds by channeling or uniting in spirit and soul with demonic influences. Others become spiritual crossbreeds by uniting in spirit, soul, and body with demonic influences thru genetic engineering. The majority become flesh governed which is also a form of uncleanliness. The people who are flesh governed (even those who call themselves “Christian”) will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Scripture says, “And it is perfectly evident what the old nature does. It expresses itself in sexual immorality, impurity and indecency; involvement with the occult and with drugs; in feuding, fighting, becoming jealous and getting angry; in selfish ambition, factionalism, intrigue and envy; in drunkenness, orgies and things like these. I warn you now as I have warned you before: those who do such things will have no share in the Kingdom of God! (Galatians 5:19-21)
In the New Covenant, Yeshua further illustrated the difference between the spiritually clean and unclean by rebuking unclean spirits and by instructing us not to entertain uncleanliness. With Yeshua’s illustration, we know that nothing is unclean of itself, it is unclean because of demonic influence, because we deem it that way, or because God has called it unclean. With Yeshua’s example, we learn that we can separate the soul and spirit with God’s Word, send demons fleeing, and fill the empty space with Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit in Hebrew). In Galatians 5:24, Paul instructs us how to place the Spirit in governing authority over our flesh. He says, “Moreover, those who belong to the Messiah Yeshua have put their old nature to death on the stake, along with its passions and desires. ” With this, we know that we must sanctify the gates of our soul from unclean things (including celebrations, entertainment, and relationships) and crucify our own desires to submit our lives to Yeshua.
It’s so common that we take our desires, and open the Bible to justify their appropriation in our lives. That’s not right! We open Deuteronomy 28 and read, “You shall be blessed in your coming and in your going”, we don’t read the contingency or align with it, and we speak that “into existence” seasoning it without God’s orchestration to bring it to fruition. If you want to be rich, you should take that desire, crucify it, and submit to God’s will of service Him, to others, and soul winning. If you want to eat unhealthy, you must take your desire, crucify it, and submit to God’s will for you to eat to supply nutrition rather than eating to appease the flesh. Seek His Kingdom FIRST. Your victory is not of this world, so invest where pests cannot destroy, people cannot steal, and value doesn’t fluctuate. Don’t get too comfortable here because those are the people who will have a harder time entering the Kingdom of God than entering the eye of a needle (economically rich or poor), don’t be one of those!
When we stay connected to the unclean, it is the leaven that ruins the batch, or the cold water that neutralizes the hot. Our connection to someone or something that is un-yielded to God is an open door for the demons speaking to them to speak thru them to you, and encourage you to compromise into self-deception, flesh leadership, and a state of being lukewarm. We become more and more warm about “small sins”; those that most people overlook like lying, distorting the truth, stealing inexpensive items, and so on. Then, before you know it, you have become completely oblivious to “small sins”, and you become accepting of other things as well. This is extremely dangerous! Revelation 21:8 says, “But as for the cowardly, the untrustworthy, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those involved with the occult and with drugs, idol-worshippers, and all LIARS — their destiny is the lake burning with fire and sulfur, the second death.”(emphasis added) Do you see liars in there? There is no small and large, no acceptable lukewarm; it’s hot or cold, and only the HOT will enter the Kingdom. Let us be Hot for you Lord!
My greatest fear is self-deception into being lukewarm, which is like a state of hypnosis. This is so common today! That fear keeps me reading my Bible with an open mind; allowing God to show me the error of my ways. My greatest fear keeps me desiring to keep a smile on the Messiah’s face when He looks at me. It keeps me wanting to do what He said He wanted rather than what I “think” He said.
I had a dream a couple weeks ago where I could hear a voice saying, “The greatest attack of the enemy is to make you think that there are several shades of grey”. That dream woke me up with such an urgency to open blinded eyes, transcend propaganda, and communicate the truth to a lost world.
With one of my prior posts 7 Ways The Enemy Uses Occult Evangelists To Target Your Kids, I received SEVERAL comments specifically about the way I used a Disney movie as an example of occult evangelists’ use of entertaining movies to target our kids. The comments were not contesting the facts, neither were they saying that Walt Disney is not an occult evangelist. Rather, the comments were “I believe Disney is presenting “make-believe” magic, so it is harmless to our children”. Really?!!! They added a shade of grey: a demonically influenced twist on evil. Regardless of what you or I may “think” about evil (“it’s nonfiction evil”, “it did not have an effect on me”,etc.), there is no half-way, no white (good) magic or black (bad) magic. God was clear about His thoughts on magic, witchcraft, and the merging of the clean with the unclean. He said, “There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you (Deut 18:10-20).” He said, “No one among you…”: not on your bookshelf, in your DVD player, on your radio, on your television, No one! Listen to God!
Yeshua gives the reward of those who separate themselves from evil saying, “Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood (Rev 22:14-15).” The heart can be deceived and sentimentally attached to our perception of evil, so we MUST seek the Word Of God only. There is no half-evil in the Bible. There is no make-believe evil. There is no harmless evil. There is clean and unclean. Evil is evil regardless of your subjective experience with it! Let us keep hot as hot, cold as cold, evil as evil, good as good, and magic as magic. Magic (or anything else demonic), regardless of if you think it is make-believe, funny, nonfiction is magic, and we should not entertain something that God has labeled unclean or detestable.
“Our greatest detriment is when we seek cleanliness backwards. We cannot seek cleanliness by attempting to change our ways or our exterior performance first: this is the perversion of legalism. We need to seek cleanliness first by working on our hearts: removing foreign allegiance and restoring our reverance to the One True God: Yahweh. “
If a person, place, or thing is dedicated to uncleanliness, stay away! 1 John 3:9-10 says, “No one who has God as his Father keeps on sinning, because the seed planted by God remains in him. That is, he cannot continue sinning, because he has God as his Father. Here is how one can distinguish clearly between God’s children and those of the Adversary: everyone who does not continue doing what is right is not from God.” Evangelize but do not entertain! Draw a very bold line between entertainment by the unclean and evangelism of the unclean. Jesus stood among sinners to evangelize, but never to be entertained by them.
Despite what many teach, you CAN lose your salvation. When speaking to the Messianic congregation at the Church of Sardis, Yeshua said, ““I know what you are doing — you have a reputation for being alive, but in fact you are dead! Wake up, and strengthen what remains, before it dies too! For I have found what you are doing incomplete in the sight of my God. So remember what you received and heard, and obey it, and turn from your sin! For if you don’t wake up, I will come like a thief; and you don’t know at what moment I will come upon you. Nevertheless, you do have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes; and they will walk with me, clothed in white, because they are worthy. He who wins the victory will, like them, be dressed in white clothing; and I will not blot his name out of the Book of Life; in fact, I will acknowledge him individually before my Father and before his angels. Those who have ears, let them hear what the Spirit is saying to the Messianic communities (Revelation 3:1-6).”’
Do not soil your clothes! Your connection to the unclean can severe your own cleanliness and your salvation. For this reason, Yeshua gave the seven churches as an example of the victorious and those who will not be victorious among those who profess to be “Christians”. In Corinthians 5:6-8, Paul said, “ Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know the saying, “It takes only a little hametz to leaven a whole batch of dough?” Get rid of the old hametz, so that you can be a new batch of dough, because in reality you are unleavened. For our Pesach lamb, the Messiah, has been sacrificed. So let us celebrate the Seder not with leftover hametz, the hametz of wickedness and evil, but with the matzah of purity and truth.” Be vigilant! Be distinguished by the purity of your heart which will be appropriated by your obedience. 1 John 3:3-4 says, “And everyone who has this hope in him continues purifying himself, since God is pure. Everyone who keeps sinning is violating Torah — indeed, sin is violation of Torah.”
Another very clear thing is also that when spirit, soul, and body are manipulated, and the mark of the beast is present, there is no reversal for that. Regardless of your profession of faith, your good works, your title, or ministry assignment, if you receive the mark, there is no reversal in the Bible. For this reason, Revelations 14:9-12 says:
“Another angel, a third one, followed them and said in a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives the mark on his forehead or on his hand, he will indeed drink the wine of God’s fury poured undiluted into the cup of his rage. He will be tormented by fire and sulfur before the holy angels and before the Lamb, and the smoke from their tormenting goes up forever and ever. They have no rest, day or night, those who worship the beast and its image and those who receive the mark of its name.” This is when perseverance is needed on the part of God’s people, those who observe his commands and exercise Yeshua’s faithfulness.”
The mark will manipulate their seed or DNA in such a way that they will not be able to die even in the torment to come in the last days. How horrific! All those who believe that Christians are going to receive their victory here on Earth should re-examine the end times prophecies.
Christian and Unbelievers can be affected by unclean spirits. Unclean spirits can affect our spirit, soul, and body in an oppressive way or a possessive way. When a person is oppressed by demonic spirits, the spirits are maintaining a presence, but have not taken possession of all dimensions of their being. Examples of God’s people experiencing severe oppression were given in Egypt with the Israelite’s slavery in the Old Testament. A New Covenant example of oppression can be seen in the church of Smyrna in the New Covenant. Yeshua said to them:
“To the angel of the Messianic Community in Smyrna, write: ‘Here is the message from the First and the Last, who died and came alive again: “I know how you are suffering and how poor you are (though in fact you are rich!), and I know the insults of those who call themselves Jews but aren’t — on the contrary, they are a synagogue of the Adversary. Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the Adversary is going to have some of you thrown in prison, in order to put you to the test; and you will face an ordeal for ten days. Remain faithful, even to the point of death; and I will give you life as your crown. Those who have ears, let them hear what the Spirit is saying to the Messianic communities. He who wins the victory will not be hurt at all by the second death.”’
Undoubtedly, the church of Smyrna was experiencing financial oppression, a slandering of their reputations and their worth in society, and physical brutality. Many Christian people still experience oppression today where demons ally with physical beings to cause turmoil in their lives. Many times the allies used by the enemy are completely in his possession; where a demonic spirit has taken control of a physical vessel in order to oppress the Christian person.
Examples of open doors to oppression today are debt, bad relationship choices, bad entertainment choices, losing regular communion with God, or being submitted to ungodly leadership. When have the ability to end oppression by holy choices, we can exterminate the uncleanliness. However, in some instances (such as what is foretold in the Revelation 13), the one world government system will be granted access to persecute us ONLY for a period of time to refine us in preparation for marriage to Yeshua.
In our diet:
Prior to the fall, we can see the concept of cleanliness (designated) and uncleanliness (not designated) in our diet. God separated what was good for man to eat. He said, Then God said, “Here! Throughout the whole earth I am giving you as food every seed-bearing plant and every tree with seed-bearing fruit.” (Genesis 1:29) When you read further, you find that He instructed them not to eat from one tree.
After the fall, clean and unclean was biblically-designated to Noah. When we go to the flood account, we can see the concept of cleanliness applied to the animal kingdom. Noah was to bring seven pairs of clean animals and two pairs of unclean animals aboard the ark. The laws of spiritual and physical dietary cleanliness are given to Moses by God in Leviticus 11. As I wrote in my previous post, What The Bible Says About Food That Can Save You From Cardiovascular Disease, statistics speak volumes about whether the dietary laws still apply today.
I believe God gave us His laws to protect us from the increasing attacks of the enemy: GMO’s, pesticides, poor agricultural practices, toxin emission, and many more things are attacks of the enemy . Do you think the Bible did not instruct you how to navigate around those things? It did. It’s called “God’s law”. There is not other place where God gives clear instructions for nutrition. People disregarding God’s Torah is the reason why church statistics stay equivalent or higher than secular society in areas such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and so on. Secular nutritionists are advising either the Edenic diet (Genesis 1:29 = fruits and vegetables) or the levitical diet (Leviticus 11 = clean proteins) even though they may call them by other names. Listen to God! He wants to protect you! He knows what the enemy is up to! Let Him separate the clean from the unclean without you questioning Him.
Most people see Torah as being restrictive. I see it as being protective. If you submit to His Torah, you will not step into the enemy’s land mines because you will be walking in the light of God.
The enemy wants you to think that God’s laws are restrictive, so you will rebel and step into His land mines.
Physical Cleanliness = Being washed with physical water
The body sheds skin, body fluids, hair, and germs (when they are picked up). The body reacts to toxins. The things that are released from our bodies are manipulated by the enemy and cause sickness to others when they are not treated in accordance with Yahweh’s commands. The physical cleanliness laws of the Bible are supported by Public Health and secular science.
- Dont touch every body. They shed and you become unclean because your touching a physical being; created from the dust. Spiritually, they may be clean, but physically, we touch and secrete all kinds of enemy-manipulated toxins which makes us unclean. Science calls the minute unhealthy toxins that we interact with or secrete: germs. Some people intentionally cause harm (poisoning, casting spells, etc.) thru physical touch. The Bible is defending you. Don’t touch everybody! When you do, clean yourself with soap and water!
Leviticus 15:1-12 says, “Adonai said to Moshe and Aharon, “Tell the people of Isra’el, ‘When any man has a discharge from his body, the discharge is unclean. The discharge is unclean no matter whether it continues flowing or has stopped; it is still his uncleanness. Every bed which the person with the discharge lies on is unclean, and everything he sits on is unclean. Whoever touches his bed is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; he will be unclean until evening. Whoever sits on anything the person with the discharge sat on is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; he will be unclean until evening. Anyone who touches the body of the person with the discharge is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; he will be unclean until evening. If the person with the discharge spits on someone who is clean, the latter is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; he will be unclean until evening. Any saddle that the person with the discharge rides on will be unclean. Whoever touches anything that was under him will be unclean until evening; he who carries those things is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; he will be unclean until evening. If the person with the discharge fails to rinse his hands in water before touching someone, that person is to wash his clothes and bathe himself in water; he will be unclean until evening. If the person with the discharge touches a clay pot, it must be broken; if he touches a wooden utensil, it must be rinsed in water.
I don’t consider myself to be a germophobe, but discharges whether seminal, mucous, sweat, menstruation, or other things happen all the time. Nowadays, people are so unaware of the Torah that they hug you while sneezing, they pray with sweaty hands, and so on. I don’t have a problem with affection because Torah tells us what to do to clean ourselves: bathe, wash your clothes, clean your dishes, etc. When someone spins the night over our house, we buy new sheets, silverware, and so on, so they can have clean things. When they leave (if they are recurring visitors), we keep those things for them. The Bible is commanding us well to be clean. Do Christians want to hear this from a secular health book? Why do they rebel?
From my experience in the military as a Public Health technician, I was able to speak to countless people who practiced unclean sex: having sex during menstruation, homosexuality, multiple partners, inserting their discharge in unclean objects (like toys), and the list goes on. They were not careful of where they put their body fluids or whose body fluids they allowed to touch them. They did not clean themselves after joining body fluids, and they caught diseases or infections. The Bible is still clear about physical cleanliness and the consequences are still present. Christians and unbelievers experience the consequences of unclean physical practices: breaking God’s laws of cleanliness.
Also in my experience in the military, I was able to respond to several foodborne illness outbreaks. Foodborne illnesses are transmitted by unclean food handling practices. Food handlers may cut meat with blood in it and use the knife to cut salad. They may leave a raw animal outside of the proper conditions for eating or storing. Secular science and regulations are consistent with the biblical regulations for physical cleanliness in these situations.
Regarding clean sexual habits, the CDC says (not exhaustive):
- Abstinence is safest
- Minimizing partners
- Place barrier (condom) so body fluids are not mixed
- Clean up afterwards
The Bible says (not exhaustive):
- Marriage and clean up afterwards
- No sex during menstruation
- And, it gives guidance on how to choose a partner (no family, no animals, no polygamy, etc.)
Regarding clean food preparation, the CDC says (not exhaustive):
- Keep the food temperature controlled
- Do not mix raw meat utensils with vegetable utensils
- Clean utensils and dishes after use
- Cook the blood out or leave the meat very temperature controlled with blood in
The Bible says (not exhaustive just exemplary):
- Cook meat out
- Don’t eat fat
- Eat clean meat
- Eat seed-bearing plants
- Clean food
Clean your house! Clean your property! Clean your property!
Atonement Following cleansing
The Old Testament laws instruct us for how to deal with uncleanliness in every dimension of our being: Spirit, Soul, and Body. When Yeshua was here, He modified the process of atonement and maintenance of spiritual cleanliness: a repentant life. He DID not change physical cleanliness. Physical cleanliness still requires physical water, proper food handling, proper handling of blood and body fluids. Even more is required for purification before entering the presence of God (I will write on this in another post). See Acts 21:26 for a New Covenant example of purification before entering the temple. For spiritual cleanliness, we must stay yielded, in communion (thru prayer and studying His word), repentant, and crucifying the flesh.
This video can help to illustrate the things I was saying:
- Read Leviticus 11, Deuteronomy 14, and Leviticus 15.
- Think about how God is giving Torah to you for protection; not restriction
- Commit to applying one new thing at a time. Speak to God. Tell Him, “I allow you to mold me into a new creation in You!”
Test everything I have said against scripture. I CAN be wrong. If you find something, or simply have comments, leave them below.
