Revelation 8-10 Commentary: How are the Shofar Blasts Relevant to you?

revelation 8 commentaryLet us sound the shofar!

With the churning of world events, it’s very evident that the world is not going to remain in its current state much longer.  We see internationally, governments and citizens are turning in rebellion against God, they are mistaking His grace with a license to do whatever they like, and if we desire to be recipients of God’s blessings, we need to prepare: by knowing what is to come in prophecy and by making emergency preparedness preparations.

Let us sound the shofar!

Most countries are completely overtaken by the love of money and bribery, and moral judgement has taken a backseat with the rich and the poor alike.  Personal liberty is being overtaken by the false messiah of world government, property rationing, population control, government handouts, and police states.

As a result of the growing evil (which was prophesied in the Bible), judgement is coming!  Let us prepare by growing in obedience to God, increasing in familiarity to His word, and increasing physically in emergency preparedness skills.

Continuing today in Revelation 8 (where we left off prior), let’s continue to awaken our awareness to the coming end times events.  Let’s go…

When He (the Lamb) broke open the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour [in awe of God’s impending judgment]. Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.” (Revelation 8:1-2)

revelation 8 commentarySilence at a Concert?

Can you imagine going to a concert, then suddenly it became COMPLETELY silent?  The throne room of God was described in Revelation 4 as having several loud sounds: lightnings, voices, thunderings, flaming torches which probably sound like fire, the four living creatures that make the Heavens vibrate when they praise continually day and night, and the twenty four elders worshipping.

In Revelation 5, John documents his vision of “thousands and thousands, millions and millions” of angels around the throne.  With all of these details can you imagine an uncountable number of living beings coming to a complete halt; absolutely no movement?

Heaven goes from the most elaborate place full of many voices, sounds, and worship to absolute silence.  In Revelation 8, after Yeshua removes the seventh seal, John saw silence in Heaven for one half hour.  Revelation 8:1 says, “When the Lamb broke the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for what seemed like half an hour.”

After a long pause, we see the seven angels who stand before the throne of God are given seven shofars, and another angel comes forth with incense.  The angel with the incense appears to be acting in a priestly capacity; standing at the altar and holding the incense.

The The Priests of Exodus and The Incense

Exodus 30:7 shows the implementation of the incense in the tabernacle saying:

“Aharon will burn fragrant incense on it as a pleasing aroma every morning; he is to burn it when he prepares the lamps.”

The Levites were commanded to burn incense in the morning and evening, and they also had to burn incense annually before entering the Holy of Holies.

When we read further, God commands the Israelites not to make a mixture with the same ingredients as that used for the temple, so we know the burning of the incense and composition was holy, and intended as a task for the priest.  The angel in Revelation 8 who holds the incense had a different compilation of ingredients and fulfilled the priestly task differently than was instructed to the levitical priesthood.  Revelation 8:3-5 says:

Another angel came and stood at the altar with a gold incense-bowl, and he was given a large quantity of incense to add to the prayers of all God’s people on the gold altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense went up with the prayers of God’s people from the hand of the angel before God. Then the angel took the incense-bowl, filled it with fire from the altar and threw it down onto the earth; and there followed peals of thunder, voices, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Prayers and Judgement in One Bowl?

The same incense bowl that was used for worship was also used for judgement.  Our prayers are being heard and justice will be received!  The Heavens and Earth respond to the prayers of God’s people with groaning: thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.  The angels respond with the blowing of seven shofars.

There’s More Than One Type of Trumpet in the Bible

The image shows a Shofar or “ram’s horn”

The Bible talks about two types of trumpets being used: one made with metals and one (called the “shofar”) made with a ram’s horn.  Some english translations do not distinguish the difference between the trumpet and the shofar, but their uses were different.  The priests were instructed to blow silver trumpets to:

1. Summon the congregation

2. Direct the movement of the camp

3. As a battle cry to God in war

4. Call to worship for the feasts, sacrifices, or days of rejoicing

5. Announce the beginning of a new moon or new month

Numbers 10 and the Trumpets

Numbers 10:1-10 says:

The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying,  “Make two trumpets of silver; you shall make them of hammered work. You shall use them to summon the congregation and to have the camps move out.  When both are blown, all the congregation [that is, all adult males] shall gather before you at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle).

However, if a single trumpet is blown, then the leaders, heads of the tribes of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.  When you blow an alarm, the camps on the east side [of the tabernacle] shall set out. When you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps on the south side [of the tabernacle] shall set out. They shall blow an alarm whenever they are to move out [on their journeys].

When the assembly is to be gathered, you shall blow [the trumpets in short, sharp tones], but without sounding an alarm. The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and the trumpets shall be for you a perpetual statute throughout your generations.

When you go to war in your land against the enemy that attacks you, then sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.  Also in the day of rejoicing, and in your appointed feasts, and at the beginnings of your months, you shall sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifice of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”

Shofar vs. Silver Trumpets

In his book, The Shofar: Ancient Sounds of The Messiah, Dr. Richard Booker notes the differing uses of the metal trumpet, rather than the shofar or ram’s horn.  In contrast to the use of the silver trumpet, Dr. Booker says the shofar was used as the sound of revelation, redemption, release, rest, repentance, and ressurrection.  In Revelation 8, as the seven shofars are blown, we will see how each shofar ushers in a different sound or purpose.

revelation 8 commentary

This image shows a hail storm. The Revelation talked about hail mixed with fire and blood. Can you imagine that?

The First Shofar: Hail and Fire mixed with Blood

Revelation 8:7 says:

The first [angel] sounded [his trumpet], and there was [a storm of] hail and fire, mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.”

Hail as a Biblical Symbol

Recurrently throughout the Bible, hail was used to to humble and judge.  Hail was one of the plagues God used for judgement on Egypt (Exodus 9), and hail was used against the Amorites when they came to battle against Israel (Joshua 10:11).

In Job 38:22-23, when God was humbling Job, informing Him that He has control, He said, ““Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, Or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, For the day of battle and war?”

Fire as a Biblical Symbol

Fire is used to refine and judge.  Before a holy King can return to Earth in His glory, the way must be paved by removing unholiness ushered in by the fall of man, and sin thereafter.

Similar to the burning bush, the descent onto Mount Sinai, or the inhabiting of the tabernacle of God, fire was used to cleanse the portal where the holy King would enter into the Earth realm.  Genesis 19:24 shows God using fire for judgement.

revelation 8 commentaryIt says, “Then the Lord rained down brimstone (flaming sulfur) and fire on Sodom and on Gomorrah from the Lord out of heaven.”  Later, we see David talking about God’s use of fire saying, “Upon the wicked (godless) He will rain coals of fire; Fire and brimstone and a dreadful scorching wind will be the portion of their cup [of doom].”(Psalm 11:8)

Blood is used to give life, to distribute nutrients, to cleanse, and to atone for sin. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life [which it represents].’(Leviticus 17:11)

What’s the Hail, Fire, and Blood Mean?

Collectively, the blowing of the shofar, along with the descent of hail, blood, and fire is preparing the way for the return of Yeshua.  He has shown mercy to the inhabitants of the world, and despite His grace, they have chosen to grow in stronger and stronger rebellion against Him.

The state of rebellion has to be cleansed from the Earth before the Messiah can reign with his bride for one thousand years.  The hail, fire, and blood clears the way, removes unholiness, refines the remainder, instills the fear of God and awe of His sovereignty into covenant keepers, and atones for the sin committed that has allowed curses to rest on the land.

Revelation 8 Commentary: The Second Shofar and a Blazing Mountain Hurled into a Sea

“The second angel sounded [his shofar], and something like a great mountain blazing with fire was hurled into the sea; and a third of the sea was turned to blood;  and a third of the living creatures that were in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.”(Revelation 8:8-9)

In Hebrews 12:18-19, Paul made a point, he said:

For you have not come [as did the Israelites in the wilderness] to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to gloom and darkness and a raging windstorm, and to the blast of a trumpet and a sound of words [such that] those who heard it begged that nothing more be said to them.”

The Israelites that were taken from captivity to the wilderness, and guided to the Promised Land were ushered by signs of God’s immense power.  Today, many people (covenant keepers included) have forgotten the immense authority and power of God.  Can you fathom a mountain being thrown?

revelation 8 commentary

This is a fairly small bomb blast. Nuclear warfare is much more complex and dangerous.

What Would Man Have to Do To Throw a Mountain into a Sea?

Man has to use an immense amount of dynamite of powerful blasting agents (like nuclear warfare weapons) to move a mountain or break a hole thru it.  For a mountain (as heavy and solid as they are) to lift from its place and be thrown to the sea, we can almost be assured that it will cause immense earthquakes as the Earth’s plates break at the receipt of the weight and impact of a dropping mountain.

The breaking of the Earth plates and the release of chemicals from rock layers alone can cause the seas to turn into blood, but with God’s sovereignty added, we know that this deed exceeds the powers shown by any man or any other god.  Many preach a tolerant “Jesus” who accepts whatever effort we present in His name.  The seven trumpets are restoring our knowledge to the truth and sovereignty of God, and awe of His Son.  God showed His sovereignty thru creation.  As He told Job:

Since your days began, have you ever commanded the morning,
And caused the dawn to know its place,
So that light may take hold of the corners of the earth
And shake the wickedness out of it?
“The earth is changed like clay into which a seal is pressed;
And the things [of the earth] stand out like a [multi-colored] garment.
“Their light is withheld from the wicked,
And the uplifted arm is broken.

“Have you entered and explored the springs of the sea
Or [have you] walked in the recesses of the deep?
“Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
Or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
“Have you understood the expanse of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.

“Where is the way where light dwells?
And as for darkness, where is its place,
That you may take it to its territory
And that you may know the paths to its house?

With the signs of the hail, fire, and blood alongside the throwing of a mountain and 1/3 of the seas turning to blood, we will be restored to a clear understanding of the depth of God’s power.

revelation 8 commentaryThe Third Shofar: The “Bitterness” Star Falls

The third angel sounded [his trumpet], and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch [flashing across the sky], and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of [fresh] waters.  The name of the star is Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the waters, because they had become bitter (toxic).  (Revelation 8:10-11)

The stars have always offered a message of redemption and warning to all those who would listen.  They inform us of time and keep us in sync with out creator. Genesis 1:14:

“Then God said, “Let there be light-bearers (sun, moon, stars) in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be useful for signs (tokens) [of God’s provident care], and for marking seasons, days, and years”

When Yeshua was born, it was the message in the stars that informed the wisemen the Messiah had come.  God used the stars as a symbol to Abraham of the vastness of His salvation blessing.  Stars were used to represent the tribes of Israel and the angels.

Falling stars were used to represent Satan and the angels that disobeyed God and were thrown from Heaven.  Satan has always made attempts to distract mankind from hearing the voice written in the stars.  Every empire in his beast system has attempted to orchestrate an alternate calendar system: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and Britain/United Nations.

The Voice of the Stars and The Current Times

Currently, the kingdom of darkness has turned most of the world away from listening to the voice of the stars, understanding God’s message and timing for us, and being prepared for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled by orchestrating the three most commonly used measures of time keeping in the world: the Gregorian Calendar, the Hillel Jewish Calendar, and the Julian Calendar.

We (covenant keepers) MUST get back to hearing the voice of the stars!  Unfortunately, the road is narrow, and whether we choose or not, Wormwood will speak at a volume everyone will hear.  This star (asteroid or meteor) will fall from the sky and cause one-third of the rivers and springs of fresh waters to become toxic.

revelation 8 commentaryThe Fourth Shofar: One-Third of the Skylights go Dark

“Then the fourth angel sounded [his shofar], and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and a third of the daylight would not shine, and the night in the same way [would not shine].” (Revelation 8:12)

The sky lights (sun, moon, stars, and planets-biblically referred to as stars) have been our voice for understanding the times.  They also enable our sustenance; without skylights, we are unable to grow as much food and starvation increases.

As this point, the water supply has been minimized vastly, one third of the earth, trees, and grass have been destroyed, and the skylights go dark.  Our ability to work to grow food is extremely minimized by this point in the Tribulation.  Accordingly, for the covenant keepers of God, we must trust in the provision of God despite the circumstances around us.  God has assured us throughout the entire Bible that those who are obedient to His word will not inherit His wrath.

Contrary to what many say, He has not said that He will rapture us before any of this takes place, but shadows throughout the Old Testament (such as the Israelites in Egypt or Lot in Sodom) show His provisions for the obedient while His wrath is poured our on the disobedient.

Much debate goes into “where” the covenant keepers will be during the times of the trumpets, and we will not actually know assuredly until the time comes, but what we do know is we will be distinguished as recipients for blessing rather than recipients for the wrath revealed thru the trumpet judgments.  Regarding this, King Solomon and Apostle Paul said:

“Riches will not provide security in the day of wrath and judgment, But righteousness rescues from death.” (Proverbs 11:4)

“The desire of the righteous brings only good, But the expectation of the wicked brings wrath.” (Proverbs 11:23)

“So put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body [with its sensual, self-centered instincts] immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is [a kind of] idolatry [because it replaces your devotion to God].  Because of these [sinful] things the [divine] wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience [those who fail to listen and who routinely and obstinately disregard God’s precepts],  and in these [sinful things] you also once walked, when you were habitually living in them [without the knowledge of Christ]. (Colossians 3:5-7)

revelation 8 commentaryThe Fifth Shofar-First Woe: Locusts

Revelation 8:13 describes the first of three woes.  It says:

Then I looked, and I heard a solitary eagle flying in midheaven [for all to see], saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe [great wrath is coming] to those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpets which the three angels are about to sound [announcing ever greater judgments]!”  We know the three woes are going to escalate the intensity of judgement on the Earth.

Then the fifth angel sounded [his trumpet], and I saw a star (angelic being) that had fallen from heaven to the earth; and the key of the bottomless pit (abyss) was given to him (the star-angel).  He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke like the smoke of a great furnace flowed out of the pit; and the sun and the atmosphere were darkened by the smoke from the pit.

Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power [to hurt] was given to them, like the power which the earth’s scorpions have.  They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but [to hurt] only the people who do not have the seal (mark of ownership, protection) of God on their foreheads.

They were not permitted to kill anyone, but to tormentand cause them extreme pain for five months; and their torment was like the torment from a scorpion when it stings a man. And in those days people will seek death and will not find it; and they will long to die [to escape the pain], but [will discover that] death evades them.

The locusts resembled horses prepared and equipped for battle; and on their heads appeared to be [something like] golden crowns, and their faces resembled human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates (scales) like breastplates made of iron; and the [whirring] noise of their wings was like the [thunderous] noise of countless horse-drawn chariots charging [at full speed] into battle.

They have tails like scorpions, and stingers; and in their tails is their power to hurt people for five months. They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss (the bottomless pit); in Hebrew his name is Abaddon (destruction), and in Greek he is called Apollyon (destroyer-king).” (Revelation 9:1-11)

revelation 8 commentaryAre The Locusts Man-Made?

Some say the locusts are man-made technology such as airplanes, drones, or robots.  I believe the locusts may be a manipulation of human and animal DNA as was presented in Genesis 6 during the time of Noah.  Today, across the world billions of dollars is going into mixing the human DNA to “advance” human ability.

Unfortunately, as scientists advance is this rebellious concept, they are unsure of how to reverse the damage or how to limit the animal instincts.  They ponder questions like, “How can hunting laws apply to a human-wolf mix?”, and they do not know how to limit the prevalence of an animal-man who holds animal hunting, procreation, and other animal instincts.

In my opinion, the locusts could very well be a mix of human-animal DNA.  Scientists have found skeletons that show nephilim (as recorded in Genesis 6 and the book of Enoch) were in excess of 8 feet and some reached more than 40 feet.

DNA Manipulation and Supernatural Beings

In addition to the mixed DNA of human and supernatural being that resulted in human-looking giants, I do not think it far-fetched to consider that maybe the dinosaur bones that we find could have been a product of this ungodly union of human and supernatural DNA.

Although I do think it probable when many evangelicals tie dinosaurs into the ark, I also think it is probable that their extinction occurred with the judgement of the flood as a part of the cleansing of the nephilim seed.

The living creatures around the throne are angelic beings that wore the characteristics of man, animal, and some completely original characteristics.  Revelation 4:7-8 says:

The first living creature was like a lion, the second creature like a calf (ox), the third creature had the face of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.  And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes all over and within [underneath their wings]”.  Similarly, I believe that the locusts described in the Bible are a supernatural being designed and appointed for judgement during the fifth shofar blast.

revelation 8 commentaryThe Sixth Shofar-Second Woe: Four Euphrates Angels Released

“Then the sixth angel sounded [his trumpet], and I heard a solitary voice from the four horns of the golden altar which stands before God,saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” So the four angels, who had been prepared for the [appointed] hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind.

The number of the troops of cavalry was twice ten thousand times ten thousand (two hundred million); I heard the number of them. And this is how I saw the horses and their riders in my vision: the riders had breastplates [the color] of fire and of hyacinth (sapphire blue) and of brimstone (yellow); and the heads of the horses looked like the heads of lions; and from out of their mouths came fire and smoke and brimstone (burning sulfur).

A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone that came from the mouths of the horses. For the power of the horses [to do harm] is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and it is with them that they do harm.”

Jude’s Warning About Imprisoned Angels

Jude warned about the angels bound up awaiting the appointed time to execute judgement on mankind.  Jude 1:5-6 says:

Now I want to remind you, although you are fully informed once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe [who refused to trust and obey and rely on Him].

And angels who did not keep their own designated place of power, but abandoned their proper dwelling place, [these] He has kept in eternal chains under [the thick gloom of utter] darkness for the judgment of the great day”

The Book of Enoch and the Watchers

In the book of Enoch, he describes how the Watchers were bound in chains as a partial judgement as a result of their unrighteousness by leading mankind in genetic modification, teaching them weaponry, introducing them to jewelry and makeup to escalate sexual immorality, teaching astrology, sorcery and divination, showing them how to manipulate oaths and agreements, and other evils were introduced.

As a result of the unrighteousness of the angelic beings that Enoch called “Watchers”, they were bound up to be judged at a future time.  Similar to the angels that defied God in the book of Enoch, it appears that the angels of Revelation 9 have been bound up (possibly for a comparable reason), and will be released to execute judgement on the unrepentant people on Earth.

revelation 8 commentaryThe Seventh Shofar-Third Woe: The Return of Yeshua is in Sight!

Between the sixth and seventh shofar blast are the entrance of a huge angel that comes in the authority of God to John, the measuring of the temple of God, and the revelation of the two witnesses.  We will discuss the events in between the sixth and seventh trumpets in another post.

“Then the seventh angel sounded [his trumpet]; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying,

“The kingdom (dominion, rule) of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.” And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell face downward and worshiped God”

The seventh shofar blast announces the restoration of the Earth’s authority to a righteous King, ushers the regathering of the bride of Christ (which we will discuss more later), marks the beginning of the seven bowl judgments, and further clears the way for Yeshua to return on undefiled ground.

Action Steps:

1. Begin walking in covenant.  Being out of covenant with God will cost!  No one will be exempted from the wrath of God!  Do not mistake the grace of God today for weakness!

2. Get to know Yeshua by reading His Torah (the first five books of the Bible).  His Torah is the ONLY perfect way to learn of the faithfulness of God, how to love Him, and how to love others His way.

3. Sound the shofar and awaken others!

Great commentary on Revelation 8. You explained very well how the events that will take place in the last days were foreshadowed in the Old Testament.

However, I got lost along that way because as far as I know there are only 4 trumpets mentioned in chapter 8 of Revelation. So t’was a bit confusing.

Going back to the terrible events that will happen, the outpouring of God’s wrath, many Christians today tend to lean more on the view that they will be here when it happens.

In other words, they believe they need to suffer also in the Great Tribulation in order to be worthy to take part in the millenial reign. What’s your take on this?

Hi Alice! You’re right that Revelation 8 only has 4 trumpets/shofar blasts.  I changed my title for search engine optimization, but I guess it was easier to understand when I had the title as Revelation 8-10 commentary.  I’ll change that. Thanks for the feedback on that.

Regarding my views on whether Christian people will be present in the tribulation, I think the Exodus was the shadow of John’s Revelation. I believe those who set themselves apart for God will have protection when they draw into Him, but I think they will be there.  I’m more of a pre-wrath proponent.

Thanks for stopping by and chiming in on the conversation!
